  Our Teaching

The teaching of Aboriginal health at Onemda is led by Aboriginal academics and informed through our patrons, our partnerships with Koori community organizations and our commitment to Aboriginal community development.

Our teaching activities include delivering coursework programs and curriculum initiatives to incorporate Aboriginal health in medicine and other health sciences as part of our commitment to strengthening the Aboriginal health workforce.   Koori health is given particular emphasis to provide a greater understanding and appreciation of the local context.  Key local Koori community organizations involved in our teaching are the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, the Koorie Heritage Trust, the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service and the Institute of Koorie Education.

Onemda has a broad teaching program across the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, including input into medicine, nursing, dentistry, physiotherapy, social work and psychology.  We also teach an award course in Aboriginal health through the Aboriginal health stream of the Master of Social Health.  We teach three Aboriginal health specialist subjects in the Master of Public Health program within the School of Population Health and within the Victorian Masters of Public Health consortium.  See courses for more information.

We have a leading role in national curriculum projects for the integration of Aboriginal health into medicine and public health.  We have undertaken audits, curriculum innovations and developed networks of Indigenous health educators, such as the Leaders in Indigenous Medical Education (LIME) network and the National Indigenous Public Health Education Network  These projects have involved partnerships with the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand (MDANZ), the Public Health Education and Research Program (PHERP), the Australian Network of Academic Public Health Institutions (ANAPHI), the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) and the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

The Chair of Indigenous Health is located within Onemda which is the leading teaching and research centre for Aboriginal health across The University of Melbourne.  We work closely with the Centre for Indigenous Education to assist with providing support to Indigenous students.  Our staff also supervise postgraduate research students.
