  Masters of Social Health (Aboriginal Health)

The Aboriginal Health stream within the Master of Social Health provides health professionals and policy-makers with a solid grounding for practice in community and institutional Indigenous public health contexts. In 2003 the national Indigenous Public Health curriculum audit held a National forum which resulted in the identificatin of core Indigenous health content deemed foundational to the practice of public Health professionals. The Masters of Social Health (Aboriginal Health) is designed for...

...clinical, community and public health professionals and lay-persons with a specific interest in Aboriginal health, the course explores ethical Indigenous health practice, Aboriginal health policy processes,  historical determinants of Aboriginal health and contemporary debates in Aboriginal health through the application of critical social and cultural analysis.

The three core Koori Health subjects are:

Koori Health: Past to Present
Policy Processes in Aboriginal Health
Critical Debates in Aboriginal Health

These subjects also qualify as Part II subjects for Masters of Public Health.

Aboriginal applicants are encouraged to apply. Koori applicants who gain entry to the Masters can apply for scholarships. Other postgraduate coursework students can also apply for the Postgraduate Capacity building research Bursaries for Indigenous Australians (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences).

The Master of Social Health (Aboriginal Health) is a new and unique program offered by the Onemda VicHealth Koori Unit in the School of Population Health at the University of Melbourne. The unit, led by Professor Ian Anderson (author of Koorie Health in Koorie Hands), is at the forefront of research and postgraduate teaching in Aboriginal health. The Aboriginal Health stream within the Master of Social Health provides health professionals and policy-makers with a solid grounding for practice in community and institutional Indigenous public health contexts.

Aboriginal applicants are encouraged to apply. Koori applicants who gain entry to the Masters can apply for INTRAIN Scholarships from the Department of Human Services.
